According to a press release from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma , Brian Thomas Green, announced e 44, of Mount Pleasant, Texas, pled guilty to Use and carry of a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence a crime punishable by any term of years up to life imprisonment, and up to a $250,000.00 fine or both.


The Information alleged that on or about the 13th day of July, 2011, in the Eastern District of Oklahoma and elsewhere, the defendant, Brian Thomas Green aka Country, did knowingly carry and use a firearm, that is, a small caliber revolver of unknown manufacture and serial number, during and in relation to a crime of violence for which he may be prosecuted in a court of the United States, that is, Violent Crime in Aid of Racketeering – Murder.


The charges arose from a joint investigation by the Homeland Security Investigations Operation Community Shield Gang Task Force, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, Longview Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, Carrollton Texas Police Department, McCurtain County Sheriff’s Office, Panola County Texas Sheriff’s Office, United States Bureau of Prisons, and the Texas Rangers.


The Honorable Kimberly E. West, U.S. Magistrate Judge in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, in Muskogee, accepted the plea and ordered the completion of a presentence investigation report.


Assistant United States Attorney Rob Wallace represented the United States.

Edward Leon Smallwood of Heavener, Oklahoma was born May 27, 1938 in Heavener, Oklahoma to Fred, Sr. and Velma (Ford) Smallwood and passed away May 20, 2017 in Poteau, Oklahoma at the age of 78.


He is survived by:

Keith Benson and companion Jenn of Roland, Oklahoma
Eddie Smallwood and wife Cynthia of Heavener, Oklahoma

Five brothers:
Fred J.R. Smallwood and wife Dorene of Poteau, Oklahoma
Jessie Smallwood and wife Pauline of Heavener, Oklahoma
Paul Smallwood of Heavener, Oklahoma
Clarence Smallwood and wife Mona of Bates, Arkansas
Carol Smallwood and wife Shirley of Heavener, Oklahoma

Three sisters:
Mary Taylor of Heavener, Oklahoma
Nellie Watts and husband C.J. of Heavener, Oklahoma
Barbara Collins of Heavener, Oklahoma

Numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren

Several nieces, nephews, and friends


He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred, Sr. and Velma Smallwood; three sons, David Smallwood, Kenneth Smallwood, and Edward Junior; and one daughter, Teresa Smallwood.


Edward was a long-time resident of the area and was an Assembly Line worker for Whirlpool.


After he retired from Whirlpool, he went to work for the City of Heavener. He was of the Catholic faith.


Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at Heavener First Assembly of God Church with Reverend Charlie Scott and Reverend Ray Weaver officiating. Interment will follow in Hontubby Cemetery under the direction of Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home of Heavener, Oklahoma.


Pallbearers will be: Laramie Thompson, Carrol Smallwood, Nathan Underwood, Lucas O’Neill, Bryan Thompson, and Isaiah Thompson.


Viewing will be from noon until 8:30 p.m., Tuesday with the family visiting with friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.

At approximately 4:18 am on May 22, 2017, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol were dispatched to the scene of a one vehicle accident that occurred on United States Highway 64 and State Highway 141.

The accident was approximately two miles north of Gans in Sequoyah County.


According to the report, a GMC Yukon driven by Matthew Neville 25, from Muskogee, was westbound on US64 when his vehicle departed the roadway to the left striking an embankment and a tree.


Neville was transported to Sparks Regional Medical Center by Pafford EMS and was admitted with head and trunk internal injuries, he is listed in stable condition.


According to the report the condition of driver: Odor of alcoholic beverage and the cause of collision: Intoxication and seat belts were not in use.


The accident was investigated by the OHP.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, one woman injured after the ATV she was driving overturned.

The accident occurred at approximately 6:15pm on May 21, 2017 at the Sarge Creek UTV trails, located approximately 2 miles east of Kaw City, OK located in Kay County.

Kaitlin Schauf, 20, of Ponca City, was driving a Can Am 650cc on the ATV course approaching a berm. She was traveling too fast to negotiate the terrain causing the ATV to overturn  onto the driver side.

According to the report, Scauf was not wearing a helmet.

Schauf was transported by private vehicle to the Ponca City Alliance Health Medical Center in Ponca City and was admitted in stable condition for injury to arm.

The accident was investigated by the OHP

A one-day field class taught through Kiamichi Technology Center is being offered on Saturday June 3 from 9am until 5pm, retracing the steps of the first scientist to visit the Poteau River valley.

Thomas Nuttall wrote a journal of his travels, and the class will explore the local landscape through his eyes.


The cost is $50 which includes a box lunch and transportation.

The CIass will be taught by Steven D. Patterson, Ph.D. Restoration Ecologist.

Thomas Nuttall arrived in Fort Smith on April 24, 1819--just shy of 200 years ago.
Fort Smith at the time was only about 16 months old.

"The class will visit sites he wrote about, starting with the old fort site where the Poteau River meets the Arkansas, and visiting existing prairie remnants and prairie restoration efforts. We'll end up near Lake Wister, where he camped one night," said Patterson.

At approximately 2:54pm on May 20, 2017, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol were dispatched to the scene of a multi car accident that occurred at a store on United States Highway 259 in Smithville in McCurtain County.


According to the report, a 1992 Chevy pickup driven by Christopher Pitts, 18, of Smithville was turning right onto US259 from a store parking lot and pulled out in front of 2005 Peterbuit semi driven by Raymond Daniels, 41, of Theodore, Alabama.

The semi then ran off the roadway to the left, striking a gas pump and a 2015 GMC pickup driven by Robyn Tipton, 28, of Huntsville, Alabama that was sitting at the gas pump.

The semi then rolled ¼ of a turn landing on the passenger’s side.


Pitts was not injured.

Daniels was flown by Air-Evac to Hot Springs Memorial Hospital in Arkansas with internal-truck injuries. He was listed in stable condition.

Tipton was transported by EMS to McCurtain Memorial with leg injuries.

The accident was investigated by OHP.
