Decorating Wisely: Feb 11

Well, the garage sale was a success especially since it was colder than blue blazes outside!

That was one of the last pieces to the pool house “remodel”. We’re still waiting on a few other things to come together, so Ashton isn’t quite moved into it yet.

We’re hoping by the end of the month she and her brood of pets will be moved. I can’t wait to show you guys the finished product. During all of this pool house redo and building spec houses, I’ve really been stuck on Farmhouse and Craftsman styles.

There’s just something so comforting about those two looks. They’re cozy, lived-in and easy going. How do you make the transition to one of these styles short of a complete remodel or a completely new house rebuild? It’s easier than you think.

First, you have to ask yourself, “What exactly defines these two styles?”

Craftsman: According to Houzz, “charming features and intimate proportions have made Craftsman houses an American favorite.” It is termed from the Arts and Crafts movement in the United States thanks to a British influence and the iconic architect Frank Lloyd Wright. (By the way, if you haven’t been to Crystal Bridges in Northwest Arkansas to see the Frank Lloyd Wright house, you’ve got to go. It’s simply amazing and a true gift to get to see such a work of art.)

This style is filled with creative detailing and artisan craftsmanship. A lot of the craftsman style does focus on curb appeal, but if you’re redoing an older home, that can be more difficult to achieve and more costly, so for now we’re just focusing on the interior. Craftsman style is about simple lines like pendant lighting, beautiful natural wood stains and earthy hues.

When thinking about earth tones don’t limit yourself to neutrals. Think of vegetable colors like Hubbard squash orange and zucchini green. Think of an autumn pallet. Introduce these colors by painting a wall, adding throw pillows or recovering dining room chairs.

Farmhouse: First off, you don’t have to live on a farm! This style is more of an attitude or a way of life than a style. Think Chip and Joanna Gaines from “Fixer Upper”. Not only are they amazingly talented at what they do, their way of life reflects their style. Their home is very much a family home, no frills, they’re a strong Christian family and they don’t even own a television. They spend quality family time together. In my opinion, this style screams “family togetherness”.

Farmhouse details for your home include painted white cabinets, mason jars, and rustic items like a container with chipped paint. You get the idea, something that shows a little wear and a lot of loving.

Whatever your style, the main thing is to surround yourself with family and friends.
