I have finally started feeling human again after coming down with the flu and I just realized I never did my annual Pantone Color of the Year column, so here goes. This year’s color is Ultra Violet. According to Pantone’s website (www.pantone.com), this color is “a dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade... [it] communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.” The site goes on to quote Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, “we are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination.

It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to Pantone 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level....Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.” Hmmm.....that is all well and good and gives you the warm and fuzzies, but how do we incorporate this color into our everyday homes without repainting the entire house and buying new furniture? I mean, even if you had the money, would you really want to do that? For me when and I see this color, I think of a more modern interior with blacks, greys and white. It doesn’t exactly go with my red brick floors.

I did a little research and found a blog called “French by Design” and the first line said this, “The title of this post should read: ‘How to add the impossible Ultra Violet’s Pantone color of the year 2018 in your home.’” So I thought to myself that everyone basically feels the same way. Here is what I have come up with:

• A nice ultra violet covered throw would blend nicely on grey or white bedding. In fact, I purchased a white comforter for my spare bedroom from Traci Barnes last summer for $10! I use this in Ashton’s old room and it is perfect for changing things up.
• I can see this color in a velvet fabric. I think if your sofa is neutral enough you could incorporate a few throw pillows in this color.
• A vase or some kind of accessory to sit on your coffee table would look great in just about any interior. The piece should resemble artwork to pull it off. For example, a nice piece of blown glass in this shade would be perfect.
• I also think of flowers when I see this color. Fresh flowers on the table in this shade would be beautiful, simple and elegant. In my opinion, fresh flowers in any color go with any interior.

The main takeaway for me is, this color will be in very small doses, as I believe for most people.
