Decorating Wisely by Glenda Wise

I hope you all are having a fantastic holiday season! I am finally finished with school...like for good and I couldn’t be more excited! Don’t get me wrong, I’m ever so grateful for the opportunity to have gone back to school, but I’m ready to move on and get back to a regular life of no homework and the best part, my kitchen table can finally be a kitchen table again instead of piled high with books and papers. Now my cat, Pumpkin, on the other hand, is not very happy as he thoroughly enjoys doing homework and laying right smack dab in the middle of it all.

In addition to finishing school this week, it’s also Nutcracker week. Well, at the time you’re reading this it will technically be Nutcracker weekend. It’s our last one, I cannot believe it. It seems like just yesterday that Gracie was one of the little ones dreaming of being one of the “big girls” wearing pointe shoes. It’s funny how life can suddenly feel like it has passed you by. I guess what has always been important to me and our family is keeping the magic of Christmas alive. I’m not talking about gifts per se; I’m talking about the real magic of Christmas. Actually, this Christmas we’ve agreed to not do all the big gift giving, the gifts we exchange either need to be handmade or a service project to an organization or someone in need.

So how do we keep the magic of Christmas alive? That’s the million-dollar question, right?! I was actually thinking about this last Sunday when we were waiting for Oklahoma City University’s Annual Home for the Holidays show to begin. Side note: That show is exceptional! You should plan to attend next year. It’s like a little mini version of watching the Rockettes. Anyway, back to my point, I think we’re all searching for the magic, hence, the success of Hallmark’s 24/7 Christmas movies and Christmas music playing a month before. Somewhere along the way, we’ve gotten a little messed up when it comes to the real magic and the commercialization. I’m certainly not saying anything negative about people buying gifts and shopping at all. I’m particularly fond of people shopping locally and supporting our small businesses. I’m just wondering where this insatiable need to go in debt buying Christmas gift after Christmas gift has come from. I mean, in years past, Donnie and I are just as guilty as anybody is when it comes to this. During some of my coursework, I had to study current retail market trends in relation to the generations and I can tell you that the Millennials are getting a lot of this right. They are less about the big fancy everything and more about life experiences.

So, what in the world does any of this have to do with home decorating? Nothing, actually. I just feel it is necessary to keep the magic alive no matter what age. Heck, the elves still visit my girls each day in December. What are the elves? Well, they put little items in the pockets of an Advent calendar each day until Christmas. These items are anything from candy to Chapstick to Christmas socks. It’s just a fun little thing we’ve done since the girls were little and a tradition I hope they pass on to their own kids someday. Maybe that’s the answer, the magic is in the traditions, maybe the magic is different for everyone. Whatever your magic is, keep it alive and believe in love, believe in magic, believe in Santa Claus, believe in others, believe in yourself, and believe in your dreams.
