Poteau, OK - The 2014 “State of the State’s Health” reports Oklahoma has the third highest rate of death due to heart disease in the nation.

Here in LeFlore County the leading cause of death is also due to heart disease. The good news is that many deaths from heart disease can be prevented.

The Oklahoma Heartland Project is working to reduce heart attacks and LeFlore County is one of nine counties that have been selected for this initiative. Persons can participate in the project free of charge at LeFlore County Health Department in Poteau.

A coordinated care team will work closely with the patients and their primary care providers to assist in controlling blood pressure, managing cholesterol, smoking cessation, and learning heart-healthy habits. Counseling is also available for making healthy diet choices and tips to increase physical activity.

Patients must be between the ages of 18 and 85 years, newly diagnosed with hypertension and placed on medications or previously diagnosed with hypertension and placed on medications but blood pressure is not controlled or have other issues that would lead to noncompliance with recommended care.

Also available is Tai Chi Classes. Tai Chi classes offered are for all ages and are encouraged for ages 65 and up. Tai Chi can be performed standing up or sitting down. The benefits include better balance, reducing high blood pressure and increases energy levels.

If you would like more information regarding Heartland Ok contact the LeFlore County Health Department at 918-647-8601 or stop by for a free blood pressure check on Fridays from 8am - 12pm.
