Pervasive Parenting
By Kodey Toney

October is National Anti-Bully Month. With that I want to share some things that I talk about when I do a Disability Acceptance training.

According to Disability Scoop, one of the leading advocacy sites, “about 57 percent of students with intellectual disability (are) bullied, while slightly less than half of students with autism, learning disabilities and speech/language impairments (have been) victimized.”

This is why we work with schools, students, teachers, and professionals to provide the training. It’s important for the community as a whole to understand a few things about disabilities.

First and foremost disabilities are a natural occurrence. People are born with disabilities everyday. In fact, studies show that 1 in 5 people have some sort of disability. Some are invisible like mental health issues, learning disabilities, and autism. Some are forgotten because they have become so common like visual impairments. We wear glasses to assist us, but that is a physical disability.

I always try to express that with 1 in 68 children diagnosed with autism now, it’s no longer about awareness, it’s about acceptance. We have to accept people for who they are because no one asks to have a disability. It’s part of who they are as humans. It’s like having freckles or red hair. It’s a trait.

Talking about people in an acceptable way is not about being politically correct, it’s about being humainly correct.

It all boils down to the golden rule. Any one of us can become a person with a disability in a split second. It just takes a car wreck, a slip, or a stroke, and we are part of the minority.

How would you want to be treated if it were you?
