The Pervasive Parenting Sibshop meeting for March is scheduled for Saturday, March 26, 2015. In addition to the event for siblings, the center will also host an Individualized Education Program (IEP) Training for parents, educators, and professionals.

The Sibshop meeting is designed to help children in eastern Oklahoma cope with the stress of having a sibling with a disability. Meetings are held monthly throughout the area, and are open to children ages 6 to 15. This is a free service and is open to siblings of children with any disability.

The children participate in games, crafts, and other activities throughout the day. They also get to socialize with other children who are going through similar issues. The games are designed to be fun as well as allow them to open up about the problems they may have at home. It also gives them a chance to see the positive sides of having a sibling with a disability.

The IEP training will be the basic information parents need to help advocate for their children in the schools. This is open to any parents, educators, or professionals interested in assisting with the IEP process.

Lunch will be provided for both groups.

“We’ve had a lot questions about helping with IEPs lately,” said Kodey Toney, director of the Pervasive Parenting Center. “We felt this was a way to allow the parents, who are usually not encouraged to attend the Sibshops, a place to stay close while learning something they can use to advocate for their children.”

The March meeting will be held in the FL Holton Business Center on the Poteau campus of Carl Albert State College. The Address is 1507 S. McKenna, Poteau, OK, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Sibshop is a national program created by Don Meyer as part of the Sibling Support Project. There are currently 340 Sibshops in eight countries.
