Carl Albert State College hosted nine schools from Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas and Kansas for an Intercollegiate Forensics (Speech and Debate) tournament on November 2nd and 3rd on its Poteau campus.

The event consisted of a myriad of categories for students to compete in such as platform speeches, oral interpretation of literature events, and IPDA debate events. For the competition, students delivered presentations in a series of rounds to judges who decided which students would advance to further rounds. The winners of each round received trophies for their achievements.

The event welcomed members of the community to attend and watch the students compete.

“I think this event is incredibly important for a variety of reasons,” said Shawna Blake, CASC Speech and Debate Coach and Fine Arts Instructor. “Students who are involved in a Forensics team tend to think critically, develop speaking skills and enhance their creativity as a result of their participation. The experiences they gain from membership foster diverse viewpoints through the spirit of debate, expression and social awareness. It’s so important to be able to expose our students and community to these opportunities.”

This is the second year CASC has hosted this tournament and anticipates many more opportunities in the future.
