Article 5 in the series “The Future of Facilities” by Dr. Don Sjoberg

...that the last time voters supported significant tax increases (millage increase) to allow the school district to construct a classroom building was nearly 30 years ago? At that time, the millage (a mill is 1/10th of a penny) increased by 10.2 mills. So why is the school district needing a 4.7 mill increase now? Over the past 30 years, the millage rate decreased as district superintendents sought to use other ways to fund small construction projects. Increases in the cost of construction and interest rates now place school officials in the position of needing more millage funding to complete large projects. A bond vote on January 8th, if approved, would result in an increase of 4.7 mills to build two new classroom buildings-- a 7th and 8th grade center and a 2-story high school classroom building. Each of these buildings will feature current technology and science labs that can replace our current labs which were built over 35 years ago.

...that decisions to improve facilities are guided by input from the Poteau community? Ever since 2014, electronic and paper/pencil survey results have been the basis for developing long-term improvements to district facilities. Input has also been given through social media. Each of the school sites has its own Facebook page and informal comments have been valuable. As of September 2017, it was clear that the majority of voters would support a tax increase to fund ACADEMICS first.

The decision was then made to remove the Event Center and Kidd Center renovation from the initial proposal to save for a later phase. The Poteau School Board recently approved a Capital Improvement Plan that places both of these needs in Phase 2, to be implemented in 2020-2021.
