OKLAHOMA CITY – State Rep. Lundy Kiger (R-Poteau) issued the following statement after learning of the death of former lawmaker Jim Hamilton from Poteau.

“I’m saddened to learn of the passing of Jim Hamilton. He was one of the most well-known and respected legislators to come out of Le Flore County and Southeast Oklahoma. He was known for being totally dedicated to serving this district and the state of Oklahoma. It was often reported he was one of only a few lawmakers who took the time to read every piece of legislation, and he was known as someone who seemed to do everything right. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this time. Oklahoma has lost a champion lawmaker.”

Kiger noted that Hamilton first served in the state Senate from 1973 to 1975, where he rose to the top leadership position as president pro tempore. He then served in the House of Representatives from 1984 to 1998, where he became chairman of the House Appropriations & Budget Committee for eight years.

Kiger said Jim Hamilton’s father, Clem Hamilton, also was known as an outstanding servant of the district and the state, serving as a state senator and was a school superintendent in Panama, where Kiger grew up.

Kiger said he made sure to pass along to House leadership and others at the Capitol the news that Jim Hamilton had passed.
