Panama Police Supports Autism

The Pervasive Parenting Center (PPC) has teamed up with the Panama Police Department to spread autism. The town of Panama recently had a new vehicle. The puzzle pieces on the back of one of the SUVs, along with the words “Autism Awareness” was recently unveiled to the public.

PPC has been working with local law enforcement in the past year to help spread awareness and acceptance. They recently hosted a C.L.E.E.T. training to help officers engage people with autism and understand how to better serve that population, and have two more planned for June 27 and 29 in Sallisaw.

“We are seeing an increase in the number diagnosed each year,” said Kodey Toney, PPC Director. “Anything we can do to help everyone understand people with autism will be a step towardacceptance into the community.

We are honored that John Whiteaker, Panama Police Chief, and the town of Panama have allowed us to work with them on this project.”

Whiteaker was among the more than 50 law enforcement agents that attended the recent training. That sparked talk about the logos being placed on the vehicles. “I excited about having this,” said Whiteaker. “I think it’s important to get out into the community and help out.” The Pervasive Parenting Center is a non-profit organization that helps families in eastern Oklahoma living with disabilities.
