Little did Howe Middle School teacher, Rachel Brown know that when she organized a Howe Walkout meeting at her school earlier this week, it would grow into a Facebook group that has added almost 800 members in just four days. According to Brown, “At our school meeting we discussed going bigger with it because we wanted to get all of LeFlore County involved.”

The Howe teachers decided to make the Facebook group and just say “southeastern Oklahoma.” Brown made the Facebook group when she got home and started adding teachers she knew as members. She had no idea the group would grow so fast. She “just wanted to get the small schools involved because after talking to our superintendent (Scott Parks), I felt like it was more of the bigger schools…3A and up.”

Since the group’s beginning March 6th, Brown and others have scheduled a meeting for anyone—teachers, parents, students, community members—who is interested in the future of education in our state. The meeting will be Tuesday, March 13th at the Donald W. Reynolds Center in Poteau beginning at 6:00 PM.

Representatives from Oklahoma Education Association (OEA) and Professional Oklahoma Educators (POE) as well as county superintendents and other education professionals will be on hand to answer questions.
