Spiller and Robinson to be Grand Marshall's in Veterans Day Parade Featured

Grand Marshal David A. Spiller, Sr.
Member of the American Legion Post #210





David A. Spiller, Sr was born November 10, 1939 in Portland, Maine. His father, Walter, was killed in WW II when David was 3 years old.


David’s family traveled a lot and in October of 1959, he joined the U.S. Army. David completed basic training at Fort Dixon, NJ, then transferred to Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX where he completed advanced training. He was then stationed in Fort Campbell, Kentucky where he learned to work with 155 Tow Type Houser.


In 1960, David was deployed to Germany serving in the 502 Armored Med Corps Separate, where he drove a 1948 box ambulance. He served 3 years in Germany and was there when the Berlin wall went up. His son, David, Jr., would later fall in his footsteps and serve in Germany when the wall came down.


David, also, had an opportunity to stand guard over the Czech border patrol. He spent approximately a month in Grafenberg, Germany, the area Hitler used as a training ground for his tanks.


David married Carolyn Terrell in 1966. They have 3 children, 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. David and Carolyn have resided in Poteau for 40 years, 30 of which he has belonged to the American Legion Post 210. He worked in many jobs in his life; the last one with Poteau School District retiring after 20 years.

Grand Marshal Gillian D. (Gilly) Robinson

Gillian (Gilly) Robinson was born in Heavener, Oklahoma in 1930. He is a 1947 graduate of Heavener High School. After graduation, Gilly attended college at Oklahoma A & M in Stillwater and Eastern A & M in Wilburton.


He married after college and was employed with the Louisiana Gas Company in Shreveport, LA. In 1950, he went to work for the Kansas City Southern Railway.


Gilly was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951 serving three years. He went for his basic training at Camp Pickel Virginia. After basic training, he was assigned to medical school at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX. After his training he was sent to Fort Hood, Killeen, TX for field training for medics.


He then went to Camp Polk for overseas assignment; however, before he went overseas, the decision was made not to send any more troops overseas as the war was winding down. Instead, he was assigned to Fort Chaffeein Arkansas for the duration of his service. He worked in orthopedics and finished his time as a Sergeant.



Gilly is a member of the VFW Post #8403 in Heavener, OK. He retired from the Kansas City Southern RR in 1991. He is a member and a Deacon of the Heavener First Baptist Church.

The Poteau Veterans Day Parade is Saturday, November 9th at 10:00 AM. Line up is at Carl Albert State College, walking groups and bands will be at the parking at Reynolds Center.


Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in different categories. Bands will each receive prize money.
