Press release

On May 11, at approximately 6:00 a.m., the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) Tactical Team assisted the Talihina Police department in the service of a felony warrant. As troopers served the warrant, a suspect opened fire with what investigators believe to be a fully automatic weapon. Troopers returned fire. During the exchange, four troopers sustained minor injuries. A fifth trooper was struck by gunfire, but was protected by his ballistic vest.

In the exchange of gunfire, a fire started inside the structure in downtown Talihina. The fire engulfed the residence and spread to neighboring buildings. The suspect is believed to be deceased inside.

Investigators with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Criminal Investigations Division; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; and the Fire Marshal’s Office are on scene. Veteran investigators from each agency with expertise in ballistics, homicide, post-blast and fire origin-and-cause will work together in identifying and clearing any unsafe devices or areas, reconstructing the scene, identifying the seat of the blast or origin of the fire, conducting interviews, and sifting through debris to obtain evidence related to the incident. When investigators safely reach the suspect’s remains, the Medical Examiner’s Office, already on scene, will positively identify the deceased.

Injured OHP Troopers are:

Trp. Brett Stephens (12 years with OHP)
Trp. Brandon Seward (12 years)
Trp. Sammy Lee (5 years)
Trp. Chris Bunch (6 years)
Trp. Chance Tuttle (6 years)

All five were treated at an area hospital and released.

Additional details will be released as they become available.
