Hugo Man dies in accident in Choctaw County Featured

According to a report from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, a Hugo man has died from a collision that occurred September 10, 2017 at approximately 9:51pm, 5.5 miles south and 6 miles west of Hugo on State Highway 109W in Choctaw County.


According to the report a 2005 Ford Pickup driven by Michael J. Burton, 36, of Hugo, was eastbound on State Highway 109W, departed roadway to the right, overcorrected, then reentered the roadway and began to roll. Burton was partially ejected from the vehicle which rolled ¾ times before coming to rest on Burton.

Burton was pinned for approximately 1 hour 9 minutes.

He was pronounced dead at the scene with head, trunk-internal, trunk-external, arm and leg injuries. He was transported to Mt Olive Funeral Home in Hugo, OK. Medical Examiner Mandy McDowell responded to the funeral home.

According to the report:

Condition of Driver: Odor of Alcohol
Cause of Collision: DUI

Seatbelt: Equipped, not in use
Weather: Clear
Roadway: Dry, 2-lane asphalt


The accident was investigated by OHP, the Choctaw County Sheriff’s office, Hugo Fire department, Choctaw County EMS, Bluff VFD and Soper VFD.
