Press Release

May 30, 2018: Recently a list of candidate endorsements was published to assist voters in selecting candidates that support public education. A small group of advocates worked to evaluate candidates that were recommended by members of the Oklahoma Parents and Educators for Public Education (OPE4PE) group on Facebook. The group began in 2014 and now has close to 34,000 members. Click HERE for the LIST.

Angela Clark Little, a long-time advocate for public education and the co-founder of the Facebook group, brought together parents, educators and advocates that serve as candidate evaluators. Little’s prominence as a public education advocate grew in 2014 as she worked against Oklahoma’s third grade reading test. She first instituted the awarding of apples (pro-public education) or triangles (hazardous for public education) to candidates in the 2016 election which lead to the creation of the public facing page Oklahomans for Public Education.

“This group of incredibly dedicated volunteers worked many hours to get this list ready before the primary,” Little shared. “Because the evaluation of candidates is so extensive, we only consider those who have been recommended by a group member. Incumbents are evaluated separately using their voting record.”

The non-partisan criteria used for evaluating candidates has been shared in the OPE4PE group and on the Oklahomans for Public Education Facebook page.

It should be noted that, for some races, more than one candidate has been awarded an apple or triangle endorsement. Voters are encouraged to use the list as a starting point to become better acquainted with the candidates and make informed decisions when they vote on June 26th.

The deadline to register as a voter for the upcoming primary is June 1. Visit to check your registration status or download a voter registration form.
