OKLAHOMA CITY – State Rep. Rick West, R-Heavener, issued the following statement today after the Tobacco Settlement and Endowment Trust (TSET) Board of Directors voted to provide funds for senior meals and mental health crisis teams for children. The one-time funding will provide $1.81 million to the Department of Human Services and $1.27 million to the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.

“I am relieved to see the TSET Board of Directors stepping up and pitching in to fund core services of government. Helping provide meals for senior citizens and making sure children with mental health needs get the help they need clearly falls within TSET’s constitutional framework. This $3.08 million is not the end-all, be-all solution, but it is a step in the right direction.

“Lawmakers don’t need to raise taxes on everyday Oklahomans when there is money already available. We must continue to work together and fund programs through existing money, and the board’s decision today shows this can be done.”
