This weekend Pro Rodeo made its return to Poteau, Oklahoma!

With an entire new face and supporting cast Big Rafter Rodeo brought the breath of life back to the Pro Rodeo scene and the Phil Gardenhire Pro Rodeo. This event was a mainstay for many years in the city of Poteau and Le Flore County as well as a highlight for many rodeo cowboys and rodeo fans.

The name sake for this rodeo, Phil Gardenhire was a well-known rodeo announcer who was the voice of many rodeos over many years. His list of accomplishments is long and distinguished to include being the official announcer of the Wrangler National Finals on more than one occasion.

Earlier this year the production team from Big rafter Rodeo approached members of the fair board about bringing a PRCA rodeo back. After months of hard work from many people on May 3rd the stands of the Phil Gardenhire arena saw lots of rodeo fans that were ready to enjoy the thrills of PRCA rodeo.

Friday night saw some challenges in the weather, strong storms that passed to the north managed to spill a little rain on things, but this did not stop the action. By the end of the first performance the leader board had a list of impressive names.

Joel Schlegal took the bucking horse Hombre to a 76-point ride. Riley Duvall set the pace in Steer wrestling with a 4 second run, this run would also afford him the event win. In Team roping Paul David Tierney and Tanner Branden ran a 5.6 taking the top spot for the night, while Wyatt Muggli topped the tie down roping. In Saddle Bronc Joe Harper took Big Rafter Rodeos Who knows to an 82-point ride and a tie for the event win. Night 1 Barrel Racing was topped by Savannah Pearson with a 17.08 second run.

Night 1 was highlighted with a powerful bull ride by Lane Nobles when he managed an 88-point ride on Unhinged.

Night 2 provided nearly perfect rodeo weather and a very impressive crowd for the evening. The fans were not only provided the treat of great conditions, but the stock and competitors seemed to feel the energy as well. Kicking off the event Bill Tutor was last out in the Bareback and knew he needed an 81.5-point ride to pass by Taylor Broussard who set the mark just a few rides previous. In standard Bill Tutor style, he managed to keep up with the bucking horse Vegas Confused for a whopping 85-point ride which gave them the win.

The winning Team Roping time also came from night 2, A.J. Horton and Kyle Horton teamed up for a 5.1 second run. In Tie Down Roping Dawson Appleton brought his A game and clocked a 9.0 second run which afforded him the big check from the event. The Saddle Bronc and Barrel Racing winners also came from the second performance with Emily Miller winning Barrel Racing with a 16.85 second run while Trent Burd took Push Play to 82 points and the tie for the win.

The night closed out with some powerful bull power, the bulls managed to win the night and no cowboys were able to complete the 8-seconds required to get a score.

In all 2 nights of rodeo were very successful! The event paid out over $26,641.00 with the top winning cowboy being Paul David Tierney who collected the all-around title!

After the event we had a chance to catch up with some of the fans that attended the event. The overall feel from every fan was excitement that the PRCA had made its return to Poteau, Oklahoma and the hope to see it be a part of the calendar for next year!
