Press release

ENID, Okla. - Southern Arkansas secured its fifth Great American Conference Baseball Championship title as the Muleriders defeated Oklahoma Baptist, 16-3, on Tuesday from David Allen Memorial Ballpark. Mulerider Austin Baker earned Tournament MVP honors.

The Muleriders (36-17) needed two wins on Tuesday to win the title and opened the day with a 5-2 win thanks in large part to the pitching of Dillon Lawrence. In the second game, they fell behind 3-1 early before scoring the final 15 runs, 13 of which came in the sixth inning.

After tying the game with a pair of two-out hits in the fifth inning, the Muleriders sent 18 hitters to the plate in the sixth. Jake Tisevich gave SAU the lead with a run-scoring single and Cortland McPherson plated two with a single to right. Cole Boyd hit his third home run of the tournament to double the SAU advantage to 9-3.

The final seven Mulerider runs in the inning all came with two out. Zach Muldoon scored on a wild pitch. Jacob Richardson produced a two-run single; Dakota Wright drove home Tisevich and Richardson with a single to left; Boyd notched his second hit of the frame, a single to score McPherson, and designated hitter James Trevanion capped the rally with a run-scoring single.

Baker collected 12 hits in the tournament, one shy of the single-year record. He hit .522 with a home run - the game-changing grand slam against Henderson State on Monday - and eight RBI. Boyd, McPherson and Lawrence also represented the Muleriders on the All-Tournament Team. Boyd accumulated a tournament-leading 20 total bases. McPherson drove in nine RBI and Lawrence’s win in Tuesday’s opener forced the if necessary game.

Josh Timms, who hit his third home run of the tournament in the fourth inning for the Bison (31-17), earned All-Tournament recognition along with his teammates Juan Gonzalez and Thomas Shroder. Arkansas Tech’s Cody Wescott and Hayes Cox, Henderson State’s Joseph Shepherd and Zack Gray plus Southwestern Oklahoma State’s Alex Pimental filled out the All-Tournament Team.

With the win, Southern Arkansas earned the automatic bid into the NCAA Regional. The Muleriders, along with the GAC’s at-large hopefuls, will learn their postseason fate during the Selection Show, set to stream at 9 p.m. on Sunday.
