Dancing and Deer Hunting
It always adds a lil’ excitement to a night out when Deer season opens. This Sat. 19th is the first day of Gun Season in Oklahoma. For over two weeks there will be hundreds of orange vested hunters wandering around or sitting in every tree, the deer running all willy-nilly (without direction or planning)! They create hazardous conditions. They are worse than squirrels. They can’t decide which way to go or how many times to cross. If I was to hunt this year, I would put up a tree stand next to a “Deer Xing” sign. Just park on the shoulder where it was easy walking in and wouldn’t have to drag it back. But I think there is some issue about shooting cross H’ways. Check your local and state regulations.
I would like to show pics and tell stories about my successful deer hunts. I would like to BUT I don’t have any. Just a couple of near misses with a rifle. Now I can tell bout the BIG eight pt. buck that I killed with my Mom’s Chrysler. He was one of the road hazards that was mentioned above. So use caution and keep your eyes peeled. While I was working in New York state I learned that the estimated number of deer hit and killed on the road outnumbered the total harvest of the Oklahoma deer season. Over 40,000!
Upcoming events! Live Wire/Felisha McKenzie will have a show on Sat 11-26 at the Smoking Goat Grill. Got several New Year’s Eve dances and Parties scheduled. More on that as the big nite draws near.
Live Music this week! Let me try to explain what just happened. The Ft. Smith Senior Activity Center will have two nights of music. The Displaced 208 Dancers will still host the Friday Night dances. This week, the 18th, it’s Lisa Lawerance with “A Step in Time”. DJ with a mix of songs and line dance lessons. Then on Sat. 19th, it will turn into the “I-40 Music and Dance” hosted by Carol Meyers and James Shepard. They are making a schedule for music. Bands to be announced. I do know that “The Lawman band” will be playing there. It is easy to find. Going East, it is the 2nd exit, Jenny Lind, cross the Okla/Ark stateline on I-540.
Exit 321, Main Street, on I-40 will be the location of the “Muldrow City Limits Music Hall”. Same Big dance floor-same building. “The P.A. Riggs Band” opened there last Sat. to a full house. I heard over 80 folks showed up. This Sat. 19th, “Backroads Country” will start at 7 pm. This still might be as clear as mud to ya. But I tried to ‘splain it.
My longtime friend and guitar picker, P. A. Riggs is back on stage with Clint Basham/Guitar and Earl Brown/bass. The band is looking for a drummer. Holler and I will get ya hooked up if ya don’t mind playing Classic Outlaw Country music. P.A. was part of one of my favorite stories bout a deer wreck. I might have to reprint it next week.
“The Stagemasters” will be at Dawn’s Diner/Red Oak this Friday 18th. The bigger dining room is almost finished. It depends on heat for the diners and dancers if it is available. No matter the weather, The band will start about 6:30. OR as soon as Randy Smith gits thru with the plate-sized C’ken Fried steak. On Sat. 19th, the boys will be picking and grinning at The Spiro Eagles, Music kicks off at 7 pm sharp.
“Grannie’s Nightmare” will take their turn at the table and the dancefloor on Sat. 19th. This band brings several loyal fans and family to hear their Rock and Roll. Get there early for a good table and before Dawn runs outta catfish. It is Goooood!
“Rearvue Mirror” will be making their amazing Americana music out on Hwy 71S at Boondocks. Great place for this band in the cozy setting and great food and drinks. Music starts about 6 pm.
