Press release
WASHINGTON—Congressman Markwayne Mullin (OK-2) released the following statement after the House passed H.R. 3, the Spending Cuts to Expired and Unnecessary Programs Act:
“Congress alone has the power of the purse,” said Mullin, “and it is high time that Congress use its power to cut wasteful government spending. With our national debt clocking in at more than $21 trillion, I am proud to see Congress take action to void nearly $15 billion in funding that went unused by various federal programs.
The Spending Cuts to Expired and Unnecessary Programs Act is a good first step toward a more fiscally conservative, sustainable future for our kids and grandkids. I was proud to vote in favor of the bill on the House floor.”
The legislation rescinds $14.7 billion in unused balances from previously appropriated funding. Specifically, the bill includes 31 rescissions and affects programs at the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Energy, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Justice, Labor, State, Transportation, Treasury, Corporation for National and Community Service, and the Railroad Retirement Board. H.R. 3 passed the House by a vote of 210 – 206.
