- 1863 – President Abraham Lincoln declares Thanksgiving Day will be celebrated on the Last Thursday in November.
- 1863 – The Union Army defeats the Confederate Army at the Battle of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
- 1894: The Baltimore Orioles and the New York Giants play their first game in the World Series.
- 1912 – The Battle of Coyotepe Hill is won by U.S. forces after defeating Nicaraguan rebels.
- 1919 – Adolfo Luque, Cincinnati Reds pitcher, becomes the first Latin American player to play in a World Series.
- 1938 – The United States Senate places restrictions on U.S. involvement in foreign wars by passing the Neutrality Act of 1938. The Act was a response to the growing tensions in Europe.
