This past weekend, we held our annual majority party caucus retreat. These are always informative as we gather at a neutral site away from the Capitol to discuss any and everything on our minds. This gathering is where we tend to set the direction for the upcoming legislative session.

This past week, I attended a transportation interim study on expansion of our turnpike system south and west near Norman. This was an emotionally charged crowd who vehemently oppose any and all expansion. Something has to give south of Oklahoma City on Interstate 35, and I believe an outer loop around Oklahoma City makes the most sense. There were also some who want all turnpikes turned into free roads. This idea sounds good on the surface until you consider that one-half of all monies collected come from out-of-state drivers. I don’t see any need to give up this source of revenue.

Congratulations to Stacy Simunek for being named Oklahoma Farm Bureau’s newest president at the state convention this past weekend; I look forward to working with him on issues importance to rural Oklahoma. I did have the opportunity to stop by for a short while on Saturday and listen to some of the resolutions being presented for the general convention to consider. This resolution process is truly grass roots as you witness how the process plays out from an individual idea to making policy for the statewide organization to follow.

Congratulations to the city of McAlester on their new airport terminal and runway work. I attended their open house recently, and it is impressive for a city of this size. Hopefully, this will lead to much future expansion in all areas as having a modern airport is still essential.
