GIFFORDS Law Center’s Annual Gun Law Scorecard grades and ranks all 50 states on their gun laws; in 2025, 24 states received an F.

WASHINGTON  GIFFORDS Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence released the latest edition of its Annual Gun Law Scorecard, which grades and ranks each state on the strength of its gun laws. The comprehensive, 50-state analysis reflects that states with stronger gun laws have lower gun death rates and save more lives. This year, Oklahoma received an F. On average, 813 people die every year in Oklahoma from gun violence. In 2025, Oklahoma enacted a law to punish businesses that boycott the gun industry and worsened its Stand Your Ground law, among other things.

“Gun violence is the leading cause of death for children and young people in the United States — an unacceptable reality. Our country can do so much better. Oklahoma has some of the weakest gun laws in the country, earning an F on GIFFORDS Law Center’s Annual Gun Law Scorecard. It’s time for leaders in Oklahoma to step up and act to address this crisis,” said GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown. “Americans across the board including Republicans, independents and gun owners support solutions like universal background checks and extreme risk laws that reduce crime and save lives. Our Scorecard proves progress is possible, but only if our leaders are strong enough to act. This is both a toolkit and a call to action for elected leaders to keep communities safe.”

For over 30 years, the legal experts at GIFFORDS Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence have been fighting for a safer America by researching, drafting, and defending the laws, policies, and programs proven to save lives from gun violence.
