The 2026 Black History Month theme, designated by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), is “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” marking 100 years since the first Negro History Week in 1926, focusing on the historical efforts to study and celebrate Black life and culture, with related themes like Legacy in Motion and celebrating African American contributions to labor also emerging.

This year’s Black History Month Proclamation “urge[s] everyone to recognize and observe this month … by taking up the shared work of protecting, promoting, and preserving Black History Month as a significant part of the American story.”
