Things are moving as we close out summer and prepare for the beginning of the first session of the 61st Legislature. My calendar is filling. This past Monday, I attended a group participation type meeting titled “Homegrown Energy.” This seminar was about agrivoltaics, the practice of incorporating solar with agriculture. Our state’s appetite for energy shows no sign of slowing, and with our large agriculture presence, it makes sense to me to try to find ways to incorporate these to complement each other. Dr. Shannon Ferrell was the moderator and kept it interesting.
I am pleased to announce that the State Chamber is taking a real interest in improving our educational outcomes, mainly focusing on reading skills in Kindergarten through third grades. I attended a literacy forum hosted by the chamber. They have a plan and are rolling out a pilot to 10 schools throughout Oklahoma. Fortunately, McAlester elementary schools will be part of this pilot. I was pleased that one of the bank presidents was in attendance as he works to round up funding to pay for McAlester’s participation. The chamber has concluded that a better educated workforce will equate to a more business friendly state, and I agree.
Congratulations to Haileyville FFA on being given a three-star rating by the national FFA organization. Only 10% of chapters nationwide qualify for this recognition.
Haileyville FFA also was named a top 10 nationwide finalist for the Premier Chapter Award in Building Communities. The winner will be announced in Indianapolis at the national convention in October. I’m always happy to see our FFA chapters recognized for the work they do every day.
