OKLAHOMA CITY – Rep. Eddy Dempsey, R-Valliant, welcomed students from Wright City High School’s government class to the Oklahoma State Capitol on Wednesday, Oct. 28, for a day of learning about state government and the legislative process.

“There’s nothing quite like getting these young folks up here to see how their government works firsthand,” Dempsey said. “You can learn a lot sitting in a classroom, but getting to walk these halls, meet the people making decisions and ask questions brings it all to life.”

Students visited several legislative offices throughout the day, where Dempsey emphasized the importance of building strong relationships and how those connections can directly influence a legislator’s effectiveness in serving their constituents.

The students first stop on their visit was to the Oklahoma Judicial Center, where they met with Justice Noma Gurich of the Oklahoma Supreme Court. During their tour, students learned about Oklahoma’s judicial system and how the courts interpret and apply state laws.

Following their visit to the Judicial Center, the students toured the State Capitol and met with Oklahoma State Treasurer Todd Russ to discuss his office’s responsibilities.

The group also visited the Senate floor and met with Max Driver, director of appointments and constituent services for the Senate president pro tempore, before meeting with House Speaker Kyle Hilbert, R-Bristow.

“I’ve always believed our young people are the future of this great state, and it’s important they know their voices matter,” Dempsey said. “We had a good time visiting, and I hope they learned a thing or two while they were here. Who knows, we might have a future state representative or even a governor in that bunch.”

Dempsey said he hopes the experience encourages students to remain involved in their communities and take an active interest in state government.
