22.4 million Americans projected to sail next year, a 57% increase over pre-pandemic levels
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oct. 20, 2026 – America’s appetite for cruising continues to set records. AAA projects 22.4 million U.S. residents will take an ocean cruise in 2027, marking the fifth consecutive record-breaking year and a stunning 57% increase over pre-pandemic passenger volumes.
AAA projects 22.4 million
U.S. residents will take ocean cruises next year, a 3.6% increase over 2026 and the fifth consecutive year of record passenger volume. The forecast represents a 57% increase over 2019, when 14.2 million Americans cruised.
“Cruising offers a unique type of vacation because you unpack once and visit multiple destinations with meals and entertainment included,” said Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel. “The key is finding the right cruise that meets your needs, and that’s where travel agents come in. Working with an advisor ensure you’re booking a ship with amenities and activities that fit your interests and lifestyle.”
Cruise passenger volume surpassed pre-pandemic levels in 2023 and has continued climbing. An estimated 21.6 million Americans are expected to cruise in 2026, with an increase projected again next year.

The Caribbean remains the overwhelming favorite among American cruise passengers, accounting for 71% of projected cruise travel in 2027. Alaska follows at 7%, the Mediterranean at 6% and other destinations at 16%.
The Caribbean’s proximity to major U.S. departure ports, along with investments in private-island destinations and larger ships offering expanded amenities, has helped fuel its popularity.
Florida’s Miami, Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale lead the projected rankings for cruise embarkation and debarkation, accounting for a combined 26.9% of passenger activity in 2027.
Shorter cruises gaining popularity
While seven-night cruises remain the most popular option, shorter itineraries are attracting a growing share of passengers. In 2025, 45% of U.S. ocean cruise passengers booked cruises of six nights or fewer, up from 39% in 2019.

“Shorter sailings offer travelers an opportunity to enjoy a cruise vacation without committing to a full week away from work, school or other obligations,” said Shawn Steward, Public and Government Affairs Manager for AAA Club Alliance in Oklahoma. “That flexibility is helping introduce cruising to a whole new group of travelers.”
AAA offers these tips for cruise travelers:
  • Book early, particularly for popular destinations such as Alaska, where the cruise season is shorter and availability may be limited.
  • Work with a trusted travel advisor. Not only will they find you the best deals on itineraries that fit your needs, but they can also walk you through travel insurance options and explain the fine print.
  • Arrive a day ahead. Travelers flying to their departure port should consider arriving the day before sailing to allow time for unexpected flight delays or cancellations.
  • Plan onboard activities in advance. Popular excursions, specialty dining and other experiences may have limited availability.
