A new study reveals that ‘Charlotte’ is America’s most popular baby name, inspired by American cities.
Tuttle Twins children’s books analyzed baby name data from the Social Security Administration and compared the names to the 300 most populous cities in the US. The ranking has been determined based on the names of US cities that are most frequently chosen for newborns.
‘Charlotte’ (North Carolina) is America’s most popular city-inspired baby name, with a total of 12,564 babies receiving this name in 2024. This includes 12,552 female babies and 12 male babies.
‘Aurora’ is in second place, being the name of 6,924 babies in 2024, of which 6,917 were girls and seven were boys. The name is shared by cities in both Colorado and Illinois.
‘Jackson’ (Mississippi) takes third spot, with 6,896 babies, of which just 20 were female. This makes Jackson the most popular city-inspired name for boys.
‘Elizabeth’ (New Jersey) ranks fourth, with 6,883 babies receiving this name, of which 6,878 were girls and only five were boys.
In fifth place is ‘Lincoln’, which is the namesake of the Nebraskan city. Of the total 4,644 babies named Lincoln, 4,567 were boys compared to 77 girls.
‘Madison’ (Wisconsin) is sixth on the list, with 4,599 babies in total in 2024, of which 4,563 were girls and 36 were boys.
‘Everett’ (Washington) is next, with 4,014 babies. In 2024, 3,947 boys received this name, compared to 67 girls.
The Texan capital, ‘Austin’, ranks eighth, with 3,407 babies in total receiving this name in 2024, of which 3,290 were boys and 117 were girls.
‘Savannah’ (Georgia) is in ninth place, with 2,490 babies, of which all were female.
Another Texan city, ‘Tyler’ completes the 10 most popular city-inspired baby names in the US, with 2,040 babies. In 2024, 1,908 boys and 132 girls received this name.
Connor Boyack, author of Tuttle Twins , commented on the study:
“The data shows that four out of the top 20 city-inspired baby names come from Texas cities. This regional concentration suggests state pride plays a significant role in name selection.
“Our analysis of city-inspired baby names reveals how Americans connect with places across the country. Names like Charlotte and Jackson don’t just represent cities, they carry historical significance, regional pride and cultural associations that parents want to connect their children with.”
