Press release
From the Institute for Child Advocacy
After initially failing in the Oklahoma Senate on a technical issue, Senate Bill 339, which corrects the error in state law allowing children 8-17 to not wear seat belts in the back seats of cars, will return to the Senate floor, most likely on Monday.
The technical issue has been fixed! This should allay the concerns of those who voted “no.” Please call your Senator or any state Senator you know and ask them for a “Yes” vote on SB 339.
Those senators who voted “no” were: Mark Allen, Micheal Bergstrom, David Bullard, George Burns, Nathan Dahm, Julie Daniels, Kim David, Jessica Garvin, Chuck Hall, John Haste, Brent Howard, Shane Jett, Chris Kidd, James Leewright, Greg McCortney, John Michael Montgomery, Casey Murdock, Joe Newhouse, Lonnie Paxton, Dewayne Pemberton, Adam Pugh, Marty Quinn, Cody Rogers, Paul Rosino, Frank Simpson, Rob Standridge, Brenda Stanley, Blake Stephens, and Zack Taylor.
Let them know that Senator Pederson listened to their concerns and has fixed the language regarding the liability issue. Politely ask for a YES vote on Senate Bill 339 to protect 8 -17-year-olds with seatbelt wear required in the back seats of passenger vehicles (farm vehicles are exempted).
Oklahoma is the only state in the nation without such a law, yet car crashes are the #1 cause of death for kids in this age group in our state. Polling shows this is among the most popular bills in the Legislature, with 83% of voters supporting the bill. Those same voters say they “would be disappointed” if their legislators do not.
Leave a message if you get voice mail. Legislative assistants will tally calls and report these to their senators, so thank them for conveying this important message and urging them to change their vote to YES.
