Daily Tips To Address S.A.D

Press Release

In a normal year, Seasonal Affective Disorder (or S.A.D.) affects nearly 10 Million Americans; 2020 is not a normal year.  As much of the country braces for months of darker, colder days, we continue to fight against a barrage of daily news updates of nationwide struggles related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With daily infections reaching record levels in parts of the United States, and scientists warning of the ‘dark winter’ approaching, I have a timely interview with Dr. Wayne Pernell, PhD, Author and Executive Leadership Coach, who can speak to pandemic fatigue and provide actionable recommendations for those struggling to get through the next few (darker) months.

“What we're seeing both professionally and casually, is a sense of burn-out,” Dr. Pernell says.  “We've had more rules imposed on us in the last nine months than we've had since childhood, we’re all assuming multiple roles, trying to hold it all together as balance between teacher to professional to chef, with no real sense of a break and we’re starting and ending each day having zero clue of what lies ahead. To top it off, we start and end our days in the dark as the winter months come on. Our bodies respond and our psyche is affected.”

Dr. Pernell offers expert guidance for people overwhelmed by the new (and ongoing) rules around managing COVID as the darker and colder days of winter settle in on us, with practical steps and a brighter perspective everyone needs reminding about each day, including:

  • You Are Resilient - If you look back over the course of 2020, your life got turned upside down. There were a lot of unknowns, and each day you made it through. You pivoted, you bounced, and you kept going. Yes, you're resilient.

  • You Are Courageous - It takes courage every day to step into the unknown. It takes courage to awaken and step into who you need to be, even when it's hard. And it has been hard.

  • You Have A Choice - Whether affected by the season or by the fact that we've been shut in for three quarters of this year, remember that right now, you have a choice. You have a choice of what grocery store to go to, you have a choice about which mask you want to wear, and you have a choice about how you show up for others.  Beyond kindness, connecting in a very human way matters. Choose to show up that way.
