US DISH

With Harry Potter’s momentous birthday coming up on July 31st, the US DISH team wondered which Hogwarts house each US state would be sorted into.

It turns out, that Oklahoma was sorted into Ravenclaw, according to search volume data published in our each state’s Hogwarts house report. But do people agree?

We found that 42% of people disagreed with their state’s placement in a survey of Potterheads we conducted.

Other interesting findings:

  • Americans were more curious about the dark arts than light magic—Slytherin house was the most searched Hogwarts house in 27 states.
  • No one believed that their states belonged in Hufflepuff, except for the 2% who agreed that their Hufflepuff state was rightly sorted.
  • Gryffindor was by far the Hogwarts house people were most proud of, either individually or by state. Surprisingly, only three states were sorted into Harry’s house—Connecticut, Michigan, and Utah.
  • Of our respondents, 58% wanted to be in the Hogwarts house that best matched their personality traits while 26% wanted to be in the house their favorite Harry Potter character was in.

Methodology

To sort each state into a Hogwarts House, USDISH used Google Trends to see which house was searched for the most in each state for the past five years. Additionally, USDISH conducted a survey on Pollfish using 1,000 respondents who had taken the Wizarding World quiz and been sorted into a Hogwarts House. USDISH analyzed their sentiment towards their preferred house and which Hogwarts House they believed their state should belong in.
