FORT WORTH, TX (November 27, 2024) – Paola Pimienta, or Paola I, was recently recognized at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame’s 48th Annual Induction Luncheon. Pimienta, of Seattle, Washington, received the Mitzi Lucas Riley award, an honor given to young adults who promote their heritage in the community through education and volunteerism. This award encourages involvement in preserving the equine culture and legacy.

The award luncheon was held at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas and had over 1,300 attendees. Pimienta is the first charra to receive any award from the museum. Pimienta has been the US Ambassador for the coordination of charrería since 2021. In this role, her duties are twofold as ambassador: promote charrería in the United States and strengthen cultural and heritage ties between Mexico and the United States. Prior to her national appointment, she was the ambassador for Washington State. The ambassador position is not a paid position, despite the enormous amount of time it requires and the expense of travel, lodging, clothing, and everything that goes along with having horses.

Additionally, prior to the luncheon at a private ceremony, Pimienta was awarded a special recognition by the Mexican Consulate in Dallas for her extraordinary contributions to preserving Mexican traditions by Evelyn Vera, the Cónsul Adscrita.

Expanding her skills horseback, Pimienta will return to Fort Worth to compete in the NCHA Celebrity Cutting benefitting UT Southwestern Medical Center this Friday, November 29 at Will Rogers Coliseum.

She is to-date, the most well-known and most-publicized ambassador the United States has ever had and is the recipient of two rosas de platas- silver roses- which recognize women who shape the future of charrería.

Pimienta has been involved with the Museum assisting in research and curation of its current exhibition, Soldaderas to Amazonas: Escaramuzas Charras. The exhibition delves into the history of the sport and a second gallery has a series of portraits by artist Constance Jaeggi. Escaramuza charra is a timed, Federación Mexicana Charrería (FMCH) sanctioned event in which eight team members execute a routine comprised of at least twelve ejercicios. Through skill and dress this event pays homage to the storied and strong women of Mexico, from the soldaderas of the Mexican Revolution, to the charras and the legends of the Adelitas. There are over 130 escaramuza teams in the United States.

Recently, Pimienta appeared in the documentary film US Charros by Diego Huerta, parts of which were filmed at the Museum. The film had its world premiere at the Lone Star Film Festival in Fort Worth where it won the CineMás award.

In the spring of 2024, Pimienta initiated an award ceremony to recognize the Mexican-American women who have been participating in charrería since the 1970’s and who have never been recognized. The Museum, along with Paola, held a long overdue recognition ceremony for 13 women and teams across the United States.  The City of Fort Worth, the Mayor’s office, Councilwoman Jeanette Martinez, Visita Fort Worth and the FMCH all came together to acknowledge and honor these women. Because of her vision, the museum intends to make this an annual event for all the women of charrería right here at the Cowgirl Museum.

The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame honors and celebrates women, past and present, whose lives exemplify the courage, resilience, and independence that helped shape the West. Established in 1975, the Museum is considered an invaluable national educational resource for its exhibits, research library, and rare photograph collection. The Museum is located in Fort Worth’s Cultural District at 1720 Gendy Street and is open Tuesday – Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon – 5 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults (12+); $9 for seniors (65+) and military; $6 for children (ages 3-12) and children 3 and under free with paid admission.
