Richard K. Allen, Sr., 96, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 27, 2026, in Forest Hill, Texas. He lived a long and purposeful life shaped by faith, service, and an unwavering commitment to justice. His favorite poem, The House by the Side of the Road by Sam Walter Foss, reflected the way he moved through the world—with openness, kindness, and a steady willingness to stand beside others.

Mr. Allen was born in Kansas City, Missouri, to Bessie D. Blake and Elbert McCullough. He was married to the late Medora L. Allen, his devoted wife and partner in life, who preceded him in death. Together they raised five children: Sharon D. Whitfield, who also preceded him in death; Richard K. Allen, Jr.; Randy L. Allen; N. Sue Allen; and Bernard Blake Allen. He was lovingly known as Grandpa or Uncle Richard to seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and many nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, and extended family. He also leaves behind his sisters Verna, Ella, and Erma; his brother Lee; and his sister-in-law Elzora. He was a good and steady man whose guidance, strength, and love shaped generations.

A man deeply rooted in his faith, Mr. Allen served for many years as a deacon—and ultimately as head deacon—of Union Missionary Baptist Church in Pocola, Oklahoma. His humility, leadership, and devotion to his church community left a lasting imprint on all who worshipped alongside him.

Beyond his spiritual service, Mr. Allen was a dedicated advocate for civil rights. He served as president of the LeFlore County Branch of the NAACP, later as president of the Oklahoma State Conference of Branches, and ultimately as a member of the National Board of Directors of the NAACP. His work advanced equality, dignity, and opportunity for countless individuals. In recognition of his lifelong commitment to justice and community leadership, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Langston University.

He was also deeply engaged in civic and community life. He was a longtime member of Prince Hall Free and Accepted Masons, Eastern Star and HOJ Willie Mae Myers #77. Mr. Allen served on the City Council of Pocola, Oklahoma, becoming the first Black person elected to that position. His legacy of activism stands as a testament to his courage, conviction, and belief in doing what is right.

Mr. Allen will be remembered for his integrity, compassion, and steadfast commitment to justice. His family, friends, and all who were touched by his life will carry forward the values he lived so fully. He leaves behind a family who loved him deeply and a community forever strengthened by his presence.
