Vernon Wayne Tassey, 86, of Poteau, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2025. He was born on July 11, 1939, in Durant, Oklahoma, to Valena (Mullins) Tassey and William Tassey.
Vernon was a man of great character and warmth, known for his quick wit, bright smile, and ever-present sense of humor. He brought laughter and love wherever he went, and was the unwavering rock of his family, always encouraging unity and togetherness among those he loved. Above all, Vernon cherished his family. His deep love for them was evident in everything he did.
At the age of 16, Vernon met the love of his life, Bonnie. Their bond was undeniable, and together they built a beautiful life, sharing 60 years of marriage filled with devotion, laughter, and the joy of raising their children side by side.
Vernon had a deep passion for the outdoors, especially fishing, and he found peace in the simple pleasures of life. He also held a unique and respected skill, he was a renowned water dowser, often referred to as a well “witcher.” His talent took him across the country, as he helped people locate water on their land and farms. For Vernon, it was never about the money, it was about using his gift to help others.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Valena and William Tassey; and his siblings Frances, Eugene, Dewayne, Virgil, Johnny, Linda, and Markita.
Vernon is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Bonnie Tassey; his children Richard Tassey, Mindy Pope, Sheri Tassey, James Tassey, Vanessa Tassey, and Stephen Tassey; 30 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sister Carolyn Hall; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and countless friends who were blessed to know him.
