Newsom plated Harrison Griffith, who reached via a two-out single and advanced on a wild pitch. Newsom almost won the game for Harding (38-16) in the bottom of the ninth inning when he drove an offering to the wall in center only to see the Reddies’ (31-21) Nate Moore make a leaping catch against the fence.
One batter later, Chance Resetich forced extra innings with a double to left center. He finished 2-for-4 with a walk.
The Reddies held leads of 1-0, 2-0, 4-2, and 5-4. All-GAC First Team second baseman Luke Farrar hit the first pitch delivered by GAC Pitcher of the Year Maddox Long just to the left of the centerfield wall. Two innings later, Luke Rice doubled home Louis Holt. Rice added a second RBI, a fifth-inning ground out and Holt scored that inning on a passed ball.
Farrar and Holt each collected three hits. Farrar put the Reddies up, 5-4 in the seventh, on a single.
Long threw 7.0 innings and recorded seven strikeouts. He allowed four earned runs and nine hits. Kyle Lane pitched 4.0 innings of scoreless relief to collect the win. He struck out six and surrendered just one hit. The 4.0 innings matched a season high.
Reddie starter Ethan Roark lasted 3.2 innings. He gave up two runs and one hit. First-Team All-GAC reliever Payton Byrd stuck out seven and allowed just an unearned run in a season-long 3.2 innings of work.
The Reddies and Bisons resume the championship series at 2 p.m. today.
