Oklahoma’s 11 MLB Draft selections led the nation and tied a program record
NORMAN – Four more University of Oklahoma baseball players heard their names called on the final day of the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft, as David Sandlin, Chazz Martinez, Javier Ramos and Jaret Godman were selected on Tuesday.
Sandlin (11th round, 325th overall) and Martinez (17th round, 505th overall) were both picked by the Kansas City Royals, Ramos was selected in the 18th round (536th overall) by the Colorado Rockies and Godman was selected in the 19th round (579th overall) by the Boston Red Sox.
OU’s 11 selections in the 2022 MLB Draft were the most of any school nationally and tied a program record, matching the totals from 2011 and 2015, which were 50-round drafts.
An Owasso, Okla., product, Sandlin went 9-4 with a 5.59 ERA and struck out 102 batters against just 31 walks over 95.0 innings across 19 appearances and 18 starts this season. Combined with Jake Bennett’s 133 strikeouts, the duo was OU’s first since Bobby Witt (118) and Steve Peters (106) in 1985 to notch more than 100 strikeouts in a season. The redshirt sophomore right-hander was selected to the NCAA Gainesville Regional All-Tournament Team after striking out six over 6.0 frames against Florida in the winner’s bracket game. He struck out 10 and allowed one earned run on five hits and a walk over 7.0 innings in the Sooners’ Big 12 Championship semifinal win over Kansas State. Sandlin broke out nationally in the College World Series, pitching Oklahoma into the MCWS Finals with a career performance against Texas A&M. In OU’s 5-1 MCWS semifinal win over the Aggies, he went 7.0 frames, striking out a career-high 12 batters and allowing one run on five hits and one walk. Sandlin transferred to Oklahoma after two years at Eastern Oklahoma State College.
Martinez, a San Pedro, Calif., product, went 4-3 with a 5.32 ERA and notched 67 strikeouts in 64.1 innings this season. the redshirt sophomore left-hander made 22 appearances and started each of the first eight weeks of the season before moving to the bullpen. He was named Big 12 Pitcher and NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week after striking out 14 batters over 7.0 innings against Northwestern State on Feb. 27. He notched seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings against Texas on April 3, then struck out five over 2.2 relief frames against the Longhorns in the Big 12 Championship game on May 29. All 15 of his relief outings came in the second half of the season, and he totaled 11 strikeouts over 9.2 innings in six postseason appearances. Martinez came to Oklahoma after one year at Orange Coast College following a year at UC Santa Barbara.
A Vian, Okla., product, Ramos appeared in 15 games and made one start this season. He went 1-1 with a 5.16 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 22.2 innings. The redshirt sophomore right-hander pitched 3.0 shutout innings in his start against Air Force on March 16. He struck out four and allowed one run over 2.2 innings against Oklahoma State on March 29 and punched out three in 1.2 frames in the NCAA Super Regional at Virginia Tech on June 11. In two years at OU, Ramos appeared in 30 games and made six starts, totaling 43 strikeouts over 40.1 innings. He transferred to Oklahoma from Seminole State College.
Godman, a Las Vegas, Nev., product spent all four of his collegiate years at Oklahoma, appeared in 65 career games and made three starts on the mound. He posted a 5-2 record and a 5.26 ERA with three saves and 92 strikeouts in 106.0 career innings. In 2022, the redshirt junior right-hander made 20 appearances and struck out 17 batters over 19.1 innings, earning a relief victory against Wichita State on April 19. He picked up the save with a two-strikeout inning in OU’s season-opening win over Auburn, and earned saves against Dallas Baptist on March 8 (two strikeouts in 1.1 frames) and Air Force on March 16.
A total of 295 Sooners have been selected in the MLB Draft, including 21 first rounders. At least one player has been drafted every year since 1970, and OU has had at least one player picked in the top 10 rounds every year since 2011.
