The Sooners took two of three games to win the series, beating the Commodores 9-4 on Friday before a 14-0 run-rule win in seven innings on Saturday.
Vanderbilt (26-10, 8-7 SEC) jumped on top 5-0 through the first three innings, taking advantage of a windy day in Norman with a solo home run in the first and two-run shot in the second. In the third, the Commodores scored two on a pair of RBI singles.
The Sooners (25-10, 7-8) broke through in the fourth on an RBI base hit from junior Dayton Tockey to score fellow junior Easton Carmichael.
Vanderbilt got the run back at the top of the fifth via RBI double but OU starting pitcher Malachi Witherspoon stranded runners on the corners to limit the damage.
Witherspoon exited after five with a career-high 11 strikeouts. The junior righty surrendered six runs on six hits and one walk.
Vandy added to its lead in the sixth with three runs by way of a fielder’s choice and two-run single. In the seventh, another Commodore run crossed on a base hit to center.
In the eighth, Vanderbilt moved the game into run-rule territory with a trio of unearned runs. The frame’s scoring began with a two-run double down the left line followed by an infield single that allowed the third run to cross of the inning.
Oklahoma got one back in the eighth on an RBI single to right field from Jason Walk, scoring Mason Hamlin. The pinch hitter Hamlin got aboard via a two-out double down the left line, the junior transfer’s first hit of the season.
OU used five bullpen arms on the day in Gavyn Jones (0.2 IP), Jason Bodin (1.0), Beau Sampson (0.1), Jackson Kircher (0.2) and Cameron Johnson (0.1). Jones and Bodin each struck out one.
The Sooners return to action Tuesday night in Stillwater, Okla., for a midweek Bedlam matchup at Oklahoma State. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT and the game can be seen on ESPN2 and heard in Oklahoma on 99.3 FM/1400 AM The REF or nationwide on The Varsity Network app.
