RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Great American Conference announced the league’s second baseball weekly accolades for the 2021 season. Arkansas Tech’s Jonathon Arrieta and Southern Arkansas’ Brett McGee shared the Player honor while the Wonder Boys’ Hayes Cox garnered the Pitcher award.
GAC BASEBALL CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Jonathon Arrieta, Arkansas Tech, 1B, Sr., El Paso, Texas
Arrieta collected three multi-hit games for the Wonder Boys after starting the season 1-for-8 at the Houston Winter Invitational. He went 2-for-3 with a go-ahead home run in game one of the Wonder Boys’ doubleheader against Ouachita. He hit his second home run of the weekend in game two. On Saturday, he collected two more hits to finish the weekend 6-for-9.
GAC BASEBALL CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Brett McGee, Southern Arkansas, C, So., Pittsburg, Texas
McGee led the Mulerider offense to their season-opening wins against Henderson State and Ouachita. Against the Reddies, he hit the go-ahead home run in the 7-2 win. Against the Tigers, he went 4-for-4 with a double and home run. He scored four runs and drove in two. For the week, he hit .556 with a 1.333 slugging percentage.
GAC BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Hayes Cox, Arkansas Tech, SP, Jr., Fayetteville, Arkansas
Cox scored the first Pitcher of the Week award after he recorded the eighth complete game of his career in a 7-1 win at Ouachita on Friday. He struck out five, walked none and surrendered only four hits in improving to 2-0 on the season. For his career, he owns a 4-0 record with a 0.33 ERA against the Tigers.
