NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Top-seeded Arkansas-Monticello scored five runs in the seventh inning then held off a late Harding rally for 7-6 victory in Friday’s opening GAC Baseball Championship contest from Dickey-Stephens Park.

The Weevils (31-21) trailed 3-2 after the Bisons (36-16) retook the lead in their half of the seventh. Camden Tanner tied the game with a run-scoring single. He stole second base, advanced to third on a Chaz Poppy single and scored on a Chase Cripps single to put UAM in front, 4-3. Both Poppy and Cripps scored on wild pitches and Parker Dorrance drove in Cade Cancilla with a sacrifice fly.

In the top of the eighth, Harding put its first three runners on safely. After consecutive pop ups, singles by Coulton Doyle and Drew McNeel pulled the Bisons to within one, 7-6. Kyle Roop induced a fielder's choice to end the inning. In the ninth, Nelson Mercado pitched a perfect ninth for his seventh save.

Poppy finished 3-for-4 with a double. Cripps went 2-for-3 and drove in three. Doyle homered and drove in four runs.

The Weevils secured their first appearance in the final since winning back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017. They await the winner out of the loser’s bracket. The Bisons return to Dickey-Stephens Park for an elimination game at 7 p.m. They face either Southern Arkansas or first-round opponent Arkansas Tech.
