RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – With the 2023-24 GAC women’s and men’s basketball regular seasons complete, the league announced the brackets and schedules for the GAC Basketball Championships. The event begins on Thursday with four quarterfinal contests from FireLake Arena in Shawnee, Oklahoma.The Championships open with the top two seeds on both sides beginning play. At noon, co-champion Arkansas Tech faces rival Harding in a men’s quarterfinal. The Wonder Boys swept the two meetings by a combined 56 points and closed the regular season on a seven-game win streak. At 2:15 p.m. No. 2 Harding plays No. 7 Ouachita Baptist to start the women’s half of the draw. The Lady Bisons have won six straight against the Tigers, including a 27-point win in the semifinals of last year’s tournament.The two No. 1 seeds hit the court in the evening session. Southeastern Oklahoma State meets defending men’s champion Southern Arkansas at 5:45 p.m. The Savage Storm garnered the top seed for the second time in three years. The reigning women’s champions, Southern Nazarene, begins its title defense, again as the top seed, against No. 8 Oklahoma Baptist. The Crimson Storm have won 15 of the 16 in the series, including a 15-point win in the semifinals of last season’s tournament.Friday’s slate also begins at noon and starts with a men’s doubleheader. Fourth-seeded Southern Nazarene plays No. 5 Arkansas-Monticello followed by rivals Northwestern Oklahoma State and Southwestern Oklahoma State at 2:15 p.m. The Weevils earned their first tournament berth since winning the title in 2021. In the regular season, The Crimson Storm and Weevils each won on their home courts. The Rangers earned a top-three seed for the second-straight year while the Bulldogs return to the conference tournament following a one-year absence. They have split their last six meetings but the two have never met at the GAC Championships. The women take the stage Friday night with the two remaining quarterfinals. Fourth-seeded Henderson State challenges No. 5 Arkansas Tech at 5:45 p.m. followed by No. 3 Northwestern Oklahoma State and No. 6 Southwestern Oklahoma State. The Golden Suns ended a six-game losing streak to the Reddies on Thursday with a one-point win at home. The two haven’t met at the GAC Championships since the 2018 semifinals. The Rangers enjoyed a banner regular season as they established program records for wins, 24, and conference wins, 16, for their Division II era while the No. 3 seed earned represents the best since joining the GAC. The Rangers swept the regular-season series from the Bulldogs for the first time since the two joined the GAC fueled by winning in Weatherford for the first time since 1992. Semifinal Saturday opens at noon with the two men’s semifinals followed by the women’s semifinals at 5:45. On Sunday, the men’s final tips at 1 p.m. with the women’s title clash scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The GAC Sports Network will broadcast all 14 contests. Joey McWilliams and Luke McConnell will call all the action over the four days. Fans can purchase All-Session passes for $70, $42 for students. Single-Session passes sell for $12, $7 for students.
