Press Release

NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma’s Marvin Mims and Spencer Rattler were named to the Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-America Team, the FWAA announced Monday.

Mims is the first Oklahoma wide receiver and the eighth Sooners true freshman to earn FWAA Freshman All-America recognition since the organization began making selections in 2001, while Rattler is only the second OU quarterback to be named an FWAA Freshman All-American (Sam Bradford in 2007).

Mims led Oklahoma with 610 receiving yards and nine touchdowns on 37 receptions and averaged 16.5 yards per catch. His nine touchdown receptions set an OU freshman record and tied a Big 12 record for true freshmen. Four of his TDs went for at least 45 yards (45, 50, 58 and 61).

The Frisco, Texas, product notched 100 receiving yards in two games (132 at TCU and 101 in the Big 12 Championship against Iowa State) and scored two touchdowns twice (against Kansas State and at TCU). He registered 808 all-purpose yards, which included 162 yards on 13 punt returns (he ranked 12th nationally with his 12.5 yards per punt return) and 19 yards on his only kickoff return. Mims was a second-team All-Big 12 selection by the league’s head coaches and media.

A redshirt freshman, Rattler completed 214 of 317 pass attempts for 3,031 yards and 28 touchdowns with seven interceptions in 11 contests in 2020, registering 15 touchdowns and just two interceptions over his last seven outings. He also rushed for six touchdowns, second most on the team and the most by an OU freshman quarterback since 2011.

Rattler, from Phoenix, Ariz., led the nation’s freshmen in passing touchdowns, passing offense (275.5 yards per game) and total offense (290.1 ypg). He passed for at least 200 yards in 10 games and for at least two touchdowns in nine contests. Rattler was a Davey O’Brien Award semifinalist, was named national freshman of the year by CBS Sports and was a first-team All-Big 12 selection and co-Big 12 newcomer of the year by the Associated Press.

Mims and Rattler are Oklahoma’s 16th and 17th FWAA Freshman All-Americans. The Sooners have produced at least one FWAA Freshman All-American in seven of the last eight years and in each of the last four seasons.
