NORMAN — For the 18th time in the last 20 years, the Oklahoma football team is ranked in the Associated Press preseason top 10. The AP released its preseason top 25 Monday morning and OU is ranked No. 5.

The Sooners, who are coming off a fifth straight Big 12 title and a fourth College Football Playoff appearance in five years, accumulated 1,269 points in the poll. Clemson is ranked No. 1 (1,520 points), Ohio State is No. 2 (1,504), Alabama is No. 3 (1,422) and Georgia is No. 4 (1,270).

The rest of the top 10 is comprised of No. 6 LSU (1,186), No. 7 Penn State (1,147), No. 8 Florida (1,125), No. 9 Oregon (1,119) and No. 10 Notre Dame (995).

This marks the 21st straight year that OU has appeared in the preseason AP Top 25, which is the second longest current string behind Ohio State (32).

This also represents the 62nd time that Oklahoma has appeared in the preseason AP poll, second most behind Ohio State (67 times). OU's all-time average preseason AP rank is 6.6, best in the nation (Alabama is second at 7.3).

Additionally, of its 62 appearances in the AP preseason poll, OU has been ranked seventh or higher 44 times. That has occurred in 16 of the last 20 preseason polls.

The Sooners, who have finished in the AP's top five in four of the last five seasons, are one of four Big 12 teams in this year's preseason AP poll. Texas is ranked No. 14, Oklahoma State is No. 15 and Iowa State is No. 23. Baylor is the top Big 12 team among those receiving votes with 15 points (36th overall) while TCU received nine votes (38th overall).

Oklahoma, which is No. 6 in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll, was the preseason pick to win the Big 12 Conference by the media and boasts a league-high five players on the 2020 Preseason All-Big 12 Team.

Junior wide receiver Charleston Rambo, junior offensive linemen Creed Humphrey and Adrian Ealy, junior defensive end Ronnie Perkins and sophomore placekicker Gabe Brkic were among the 29 players to earn preseason all-conference recognition by position. Additionally, redshirt freshman quarterback Spencer Rattler was selected as the Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.

OU opens the 2020 season by hosting Missouri State on Saturday, Sept. 12 at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
