OMAHA, Neb. — Trey Gambill, a senior on the Oklahoma baseball team, is a recipient of the Elite Scholar-Athlete award for the 2026 NCAA Division I Men’s College World Series.
Gambill, a business administration major from Alpine, Utah, who carries a 4.0 GPA, was presented with the award at the NCAA MCWS Opening Ceremony. Gambill is the first member of the OU baseball team and eighth student-athlete from Oklahoma to win the award.
The Elite Scholar-Athlete award recognizes the true essence of student-athletes by honoring the individuals who have reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in their sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among their peers. The Elite Scholar-Athlete award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s championships.
Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above who have participated in their sport for at least two years with their school. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.
Gambill is the first member of the OU baseball team to earn the award and the eighth Oklahoma student-athlete to earn the Elite Scholar-Athlete award, formerly known as the Elite 90 award. Gambill’s feat continues the sixth straight year a Sooner has won an Elite Scholar-Athlete award, as men’s gymnast Ignacio Yockers won in April. Previous OU winners are Kim Moldenhauer (rowing, 2012-13), C.J. Cole (men’s basketball, 2015-16), Lily Miyazaki (women’s tennis, 2017-18), Emma LaPinta (women’s gymnastics, 2020-21 and 2021-22), Meillin Sullivan (women’s gymnastics, 2022-23 and 2023-24), Matthew Burgoyne (men’s gymnastics, 2025) and Yockers (men’s gymnastics, 2026).
