LAS VEGAS – Oklahoma led after 36 holes but had to come from behind to knock off No. 2 Auburn and win the Southern Highlands Collegiate on Tuesday, securing the team’s second win of the season.
Jase Summy finished as the runner-up, firing a critical 66 (-6) on Tuesday to power the Sooners (1, -8) to victory. The win is the 41st under head coach Ryan Hybl, who started at Oklahoma in 2009, and it marks the 14th stroke-play win in the last three seasons for the Sooners.
“This is just a great week for us from top to bottom,” Hybl said. “One of my favorite things about the week is how impressively consistent we were from top to bottom. We had guys be competitive all the way through the lineup for the whole week. We knew that somebody would come out and come after us and that we just needed to go do some birdie hunting in the final round.”
Auburn (2, -5) posted a 277 (-11) in the final round and got into the clubhouse at 5-under par, which was tied with No. 15 Oklahoma for the lead as the Sooners made the turn to the back nine. Three key birdies over the last four holes proved the difference as the Sooners scraped by Auburn and into the winner’s circle.
Sophomore Jase Summy (2, -7) was sensational on Tuesday. After carding a 71 and 72 in the first two rounds at the par-72 Southern Highlands Golf Club, the Keller, Texas, product sunk seven birdies and signed for one bogey en route to a 66 (-6) Tuesday to move up nine spots on the leaderboard and into solo second place. It was Summy’s fourth career top-five finish in 16 events, and he now has seven top 20s as a Sooner. He has posted nine consecutive competition rounds of par-or-better golf since last fall.
“Jase (Summy) played an incredible round of golf today,” Hybl added. “He (Summy) told me afterward that it was one of the best rounds of golf he had ever played. He was really special today for us.”
Drew Goodman (T6, -4) helped to carry the load for the Sooners all week long, signing for 70-70-72 to earn a share of sixth place at 4-under par. His 70 in Monday’s second round helped deliver the Sooners the 36-hole lead as the junior now has also posted nine straight rounds of par-or-better golf and has been under par in nine of his last 12 rounds.
True freshman Ryder Cowan (T21, +2) added an even-par round on Tuesday and finished tied for 21st.
Ben Lorenz (T34, +4) carded a 71 (-1) on Tuesday, and his birdie on the 16th gave Oklahoma the go-ahead lead.
Jaxon Dowell (T41, +5) closed the OU lineup in a tie for 41st.
Oklahoma knocked off seven top-25 teams to win the event, including No. 1 North Carolina, No. 2 Auburn, No. 4 Arizona State and No. 21 Texas.
“I’m so happy for our guys,” Hybl closed. “We’ve been putting in so much work back home, and for them to see the fruits of their labors is great. We’re super talented and incredibly deep, and this is the first time we’ve been able to show that this season. We proved to ourselves this week that we can go and compete with the best in the country and beat them.”
The Sooners return to action on March 18-19 at the Pauma Valley Invitational at Pauma Valley Country Club in San Diego, a course that sits just 34 miles from the site of the 2024 NCAA Men’s Golf National Championships, held in May at Omni La Costa Champions Course in Carlsbad, Calif.
