SAN DIEGO – Oklahoma freshman golfer Ryder Cowan led the way as No. 10 Oklahoma notched a fourth-place finish at the Pauma Valley Invitational on Tuesday.

The top-five finish was OU’s ninth consecutive in regular-season events dating back to last season, as the Sooners continue to play high-level golf against tough fields. Cowan finished in a tie for fifth, and Oklahoma (4, -8) was one of five teams under par at the par-71 Pauma Valley Country Club.

Cowan (T5, -5) carded a 69 (-2) on Tuesday after signing for 71-68 on Monday’s 36-hole day to finish in a tie for fifth. The freshman from Edmond improved on his previous best career finish, a tie for 21st at last week’s Southern Highlands Collegiate. His 11 birdies on the week were second on the OU lineup card behind Drew Goodman.

Stephen Campbell Jr. (T12, -2) surged on Tuesday, firing a 68 (-3) as an unattached individual to finish in a tie for 10th. It’s the redshirt junior’s third top-10 of the season and eighth of his OU career.

2023 All-America honoree Ben Lorenz (T17, -1) posted a 73 (+2) in the final round to finish in 17th, notching his fourth top-20 finish in seven tournaments this season.

Jase Summy (T32, +1) rebounded on Tuesday after firing matching 73s (+2) on Monday by carding a 3-under 68 in the final round. The sophomore’s strong outing moved him into a tie for 32nd.

Drew Goodman (T37, +3) tied for 37th, and Luke Kluver was DQed in the final round for an incorrect scorecard.

The Sooners have now finished even or under par in all seven stroke-play events this season and at 15 of their last 16 tournaments dating back to last season, with the only exception being the 2023 NCAA Championships at Grayhawk GC.

No. 3 Vanderbilt won the event, finishing at 20-under par to win by seven strokes. Oklahoma State’s Jonas Baumgartner birdied the final hole to claim medalist honors at 9-under par.

The Sooners start their cross-country trek as they tee off next Monday (March 25) at the Valspar Collegiate Championship at the Floridian National GC in Palm City, Fla. The field features 10 top-25 teams, including six of the nation’s top 10.
