NORMAN – Former University of Oklahoma men’s golfer Abraham Ancer has been named to Team Mexico for the upcoming Paris Olympics, marking his second consecutive appearance at the Olympic Games. Ancer secured his spot by finishing the qualification period as the second-highest-ranked Mexican golfer by the International Golf Federation (IGF).
Ancer, who played for Oklahoma from 2010-13, has established himself as one of the world’s top golfers since turning pro in 2013. He ended the qualification period ranked 58th in the IGF’s men’s rankings and will join Carlos Ortiz as one of two Mexican golfers representing their country in Paris.
Ancer made his Olympic debut at the 2021 Tokyo Games, where he finished 14th. The Reynosa, Mexico, native was part of the final group at the 2020 Masters, finishing tied for 13th, and has become a standout player for LIV Golf. His professional career includes five top-20 finishes at major championships, including top-10 finishes at the PGA Championship in 2021 and 2022. He has recorded five professional wins over the last decade, including a victory at the LIV Golf Hong Kong tournament in March 2024.
In team competitions, Ancer represented Mexico at the 2018 World Cup of Golf, finishing as the runner-up to Belgium. He also earned a team-high 3.5 points for the International Team at the 2019 President’s Cup, with his only loss coming to Tiger Woods.
During his time in Norman, Ancer played a crucial role in helping current OU head coach Ryan Hybl build a foundation that has led Oklahoma to 12 consecutive NCAA Championships. His 21-under 195 at the 2011 Desert Shootout remains a school record, and his career scoring average of 72.42 ranks 12th all-time for the Crimson and Cream.
After a 112-year absence, golf was reintroduced to the Olympics in 2016, and Ancer is the only Sooner golfer to have competed in the Games.
Players will tee off on August 1 at Le Golf National near Paris in a four-round competition. The course, which hosted the 2018 Ryder Cup, is also the venue for the Open de France on the European Tour.
