TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State University (NSU) made history Nov. 4, welcoming 3,418 ticketed fans, competitors, band and spirit squads, NSU Athletic teams and gameday personnel to the NSU Event Center for the first home wrestling duals in university history. The attendance set an NCAA Division II record, bringing together supporters from across Oklahoma for the debut of NSU men’s and women’s collegiate wrestling in Tahlequah.

The RiverHawk men’s and women’s wrestling teams rose to the occasion, posting their first home victories in front of the packed crowd. NSU men’s wrestling defeated Southeast Community College 40-11 and Murray State 35-9. NSU women’s wrestling garnered a 33-15 victory over Southeast Community College and closed the event with a 36-10 win against Murray State.

More than 1,100 middle school and high school wrestlers and their coaches from 36 different schools and/or club teams across Oklahoma attended the event, giving young athletes an opportunity to experience collegiate wrestling and see NSU’s new programs compete on their home mat.

“Tonight is a powerful milestone in an exciting era of expansion across Northeastern State University,” said NSU President Rodney Hanley. “Seeing our Event Center filled with so much energy from young athletes and fans across the state proves just how bright the future is here in Tahlequah. I am extraordinarily proud of our student-athletes and coaching staff for setting a high standard of grit and excellence in their home debut.”

The historic night comes during a continued period of growth for NSU Athletics. In addition to men’s and women’s wrestling, the university has added men’s tennis and women’s volleyball for 2026. A new rodeo team is slated to debut in fall 2027 and men’s and women’s track and men’s and women’s cross country also planned for the future.
