Six Sooners Still Alive at Big 12 Championship OU Athletics Communications

TULSA  – Oklahoma wrestling began the Big 12 Championship on Saturday at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla., with six Sooners moving on to wrestle in the consolation-round in Session III on Sunday. As a team, Oklahoma finished day one in eighth place out of 13 teams, totaling 53.5 points.

Five Sooners reached the semifinals in Jace Koelzer (133 pounds), Willie McDougald (149 pounds), Jared Hill (157 pounds), Stephen Buchanan (197 pounds) and Josh Heindselman (285 pounds).  

Koelzer earned a bye through the preliminary round before seeing out victories over No. 8 Garrett Ricks (Wyoming, disqualification) and No. 5 Julian Farber (Wyoming, 3-2 decision) in the quarterfinals en route to the semifinals.

McDougald, seeded second at 149 pounds, defeated Northern Colorado's Benji Alanis by a 5-2 decision, next earning a win over No. 6 Maxwell Petersen (North Dakota St.) by an 8-5 decision in sudden victory to reach the semifinals. 

Hill secured the biggest upset of the day while competing as the eighth seed at 157 pounds, knocking off No. 1 Vincent Zerban (Northern Colorado) by a 4-3 decision to earn himself an automatic bid the NCAA tournament. 

Stephen Buchanan (No. 2) and Josh Heindselman (No. 4), both with 1-1 records after receiving opening round byes in the main bracket, also advanced to Sunday's action. Buchanan pinned Spencer Mooberry (North Dakota St.) at 6:20 to secure his spot in the next session. Meanwhile, Heindselman won in sudden victory over Konner Doucet (Oklahoma State), 4-1. The heavyweight improved his all-time record against Doucet to 3-2.

Elsewhere, Tate Picklo went 2-2 on Saturday at 174 pounds to earn himself a spot in the seventh-place match.

The six Sooners still competing will be back in action for Sunday's third session starting at noon. The finals are set to begin at 7:30 p.m. CT and will broadcast live on ESPN 2.
