Six Sooners Punch Tickets to Semifinals in Day One of Southern Scuffle OU Athletics Communications

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The No. 19 Oklahoma wrestling program wrapped up an impressive day one of the 2024 Southern Scuffle presented by Compound Sportswear on Monday evening, as OU closed out the day in third place as a team with 77.5 points. 

The Sooners will head into day two of the Southern Scuffle with six semifinalists, which is tied for the second most among all attending teams. Oklahoma will have a total of 14 wrestlers still alive for tomorrow's competition. 

Conrad Hendriksen was the first Sooner to punch his ticket to the semifinals after going 2-0 on the day, pinning Gardner-Webb's Aedyn Concepcion in his first bout before defeating Indiana's Blaine Frazier by 9-3 decision in the quarterfinals. 

At 157 pounds, Jared Hill capped off his perfect day by knocking off ranked foe Alejandro Herrera-Rondon (Clarion) in the quarterfinal round by a score of 4-2. Prior to that, Hill earned a 3-2 decision over Kolby DePron of Bucknell.

Looking to claim a third individual tournament title this season, Tate Picklo put together a strong showing in the 174-pound bracket. The No. 4 seed earned a 19-3 tech fall over Stanford's Tye Monteiro before picking up an 8-4 decision over North Dakota State's Gaven Sax. Monday marked Picklo's third career win over Sax.

184 pounds also saw a Sooner earn a semifinal bid, with Giuseppe Hoose set to represent the Crimson & Cream tomorrow. Hoose took care of business in the Monday night session as the top seed to stay alive, eliminating The Citadel's Roy Price (20-4) and Northern Colorado's Branson Britten (4-2).  

Stephen Buchanan had a dominant day, scoring bonus points for the Sooners in the team standings with two pins. Buchanan pinned Chattanooga's Kendrick Curtis (2:42) before picking up his 10th bonus point victory of the season by pinning Northern Colorado's Xavier Vasquez (6:13) to reach the semifinal.

Oklahoma's final semifinalist came at heavyweight, as Josh Heindselman earned a pair of tech falls to stay in the title hunt heading into day two. Heindselman earned an opening-round victory over Brown's Alex Semenenki (18-2) and quarterfinal win over Appalachian State's Jacob Sartorio (18-3) to round out a 2-0 day. 

The Sooners also saw Jace KoelzerKaden SmithJohn WileyCael CarlsonGerrit Nijenhuis and Juan Mora compete in the quarterfinal round, but all were defeated to drop to the backside. Gabe Vidlak and Carter Schmidt round out the group of wrestlers still alive in the consolations heading into tomorrow's action.

The Southern Scuffle resumes tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. CT, with the semifinal round beginning at 12:00 p.m. CT. The tournament is scheduled to conclude with the Finals session at 6:00 p.m. CT, with all live coverage of the event being held on FloWrestling.
